For me, painting is a total release of energy. It is the best way I know to relax and have fun at the same time. Once I have chosen a subject, I may start with a contour drawing or just look for shapes. Next, I select a group of colors that vibrate and then I begin to "play"! I work very spontaneously and let the colors and the shapes speak to me as I paint.

Paintings below are Deanna's newest works, and include watercolor/ink, watercolor/collage, and mixed media/collage paintings on paper

FLOWERS

As an artist, I love color, design and pattern. In my new work, I am playing with color as a series, incorporating "shades" as part of the the title. Using the color wheel, I'm doing 12 paintings, one for each position on the wheel, with flowers as the subject. Flowers are also one of my favorite subjects to paint even when they are not part of this color series.

STILL LIFE

I love setting stuff up in my studio, then I blind contour draw from the setup. Blind contour drawing means looking at the objects while you draw without looking at your paper. Once this drawing is complete, I begin to ink, paint and collage.

OTHER WORKS

For years I painted oils and acrylics. After sinus and lung problems, I turned to watercolor. I am now returning to using acrylics with my watercolor and ink as mixed watermedia, and I sometimes add collage. Most of my collage papers are painted by me, but I have used a ready-made patterned or colored paper if it speaks to me.

LANDSCAPES

I love painting the desert landscape, with its strange other-worldly plants and critters that I can embellish with color an pattern to my heart's content. If I want a less "wild" subject, what better area is there to paint than the southwest with its ranches, horses, cowboys and cowgirls?
